📡 Operating Setup
  • Transceiver: ICOM IC-7100M (Internal SD card recording, raw unprocessed audio)
  • Antenna: Long-wire (Approx. 20 meters long / 13 meters high at the apex)
  • Decoding Software: DeepCW (Introduction & Guide via Zenn) / Source Code & Documentation via GitHub
Note: DeepCW is a next-generation, high-precision Morse code decoder powered by deep learning. It runs entirely in browsers or mobile devices for free.
🎧 Human Ears vs. AI "DeepCW"
The receiving audio at the time was highly challenging. For CW beginners, the noise was so overwhelming that it was nearly impossible to copy. Even for intermediate operators, while faint signals could be distinguished, listening to such a low S/N channel for an extended period would be quite exhausting.
Yet, look at the text output generated by DeepCW directly from the raw WAV file. The full picture of a fierce DX pileup is vividly brought to light from beneath the heavy noise floor.
📝 The Drama Captured in the Text
The decoded log clearly reveals the callsign of RI1FJL (Franz Josef Land), a highly rare DX station in the Arctic region, surrounded by a swarm of stations calling them, along with the "UP" code indicating split operation. Although there are minor character corruptions due to fading and noise, the AI perfectly adapted to the context, preserving the raw, authentic atmosphere of the airwaves.
🏆 A Successful Husband-and-Wife DX QSO: A Beginner's Brave Challenge!
Amidst this intense pileup, both myself (JJ5IZX) and my wife (JJ5IZY) successfully made contact with RI1FJL using our 20-meter long-wire antenna and the IC-7100M.
Actually, my wife (JJ5IZY) is a complete beginner when it comes to CW. Under the pressure of this extreme noise and the fierce global pileup, she was incredibly nervous and repeatedly made keying errors during her transmission. However, she refused to give up, keeping her hands on the paddle until her signal finally broke through to the polar station. It was an unforgettable, dramatic moment for both of us. The decoded text, which captures our callsigns stamped multiple times alongside some imperfect code fragments, stands as proud proof of her great fighting spirit.
Without relying on any high-end external audio interfaces or heavy PC-side filtering, the rig's raw recording alone provided sufficient dynamic range for both successful decoding and operation. This experiment has been deeply satisfying, brilliantly proving the excellent baseline performance of the IC-7100M, the incredible noise tolerance of DeepCW, and the hidden potential of a simple long-wire antenna.
🌟 Special Thanks to the DX Pedition Team
Finally, we would like to express our deepest gratitude and respect to the RI1FJL DX Pedition Team. Operating from the extremely harsh and freezing environment of the Arctic, their exceptional operating skills and endless patience allowed them to pluck our weak signals from far-away Japan—and even patiently copy the hesitant, flawed keying of a CW beginner—to complete the contacts.
Thank you so much for the unforgettable QSOs! 73!

検証時間は1200UTC(21:00 JST)。
🌟 DX Pedition

20260826 Progress Report: RI1FJL (Franz Josef Land)

    RI1FJL site CLICK HERE

    Hello everyone,

The lingering summer heat remains severe here in Japan.

Lately, the airwaves have been buzzing with excitement over RI1FJL from Franz Josef Land. With the widespread use of FT8 nowadays, one might think that making a contact would be less difficult than in the past. However, for those of us here in Japan (JA), it has proven to be a much tougher battle than expected—leaving some of us wondering, "Didn't we used to work them much more easily before?"

My family and I could only join the chase on Sundays and during the night. While we managed to secure contacts on 17m (FT8/CW) and 15m (FT8) relatively smoothly, we hit a wall on 30m and 12m FT8, struggling to get any results. We also faced a fierce struggle even on 20m CW, a band where we used to make contacts effortlessly.

Fortunately, breaking through on 20m CW last night turned our luck around, and we successfully worked them on 12m and 30m FT8 unexpectedly fast right after.

The pile-up seems much massive than it appears from our side in Japan. It is wonderful to see so many joyful spots lighting up the DX Cluster!

Listening for Weak Signals from an Island in the East, "A Small Station’s Journey to WAS via FT8"

Listening for Weak Signals from an Island in the East,

"A Small Station’s Journey to WAS via FT8"

For many DXers in Japan, after achieving WAC (Worked All Continents), the next big milestone is WAS (Worked All States). In Japan, we have a similar award called WAJA (Worked All Japan Prefectures), which requires contacting all 47 prefectures. Depending on the operating frequency and mode, WAJA is relatively achievable.
However, crossing the vast Pacific Ocean to work all 50 states of the USA used to be a monumental challenge. Fortunately, the landscape has changed. With the advent of FT8—a revolutionary digital mode designed for weak-signal communication—the hurdle to achieving WAS is lower than ever before.
Yet, for a small station without a massive tower or a directional beam antenna, chasing WAS still requires immense creativity, patience, and ingenuity to make every single QSO happen. That is exactly who we are.
Our station relies on a single, 20-meter long-wire antenna made from a household intercom cable, costing a mere 6 USD. It is a setup born out of resourcefulness rather than budget. But as every true radio amateur knows, when the conditions are right, the magic of propagation happens, and the QSO is complete.

This is the true romance of ham radio: maximizing technical efficiency and adapting to the whims of the ionosphere. FT8 allows us to decode signals well below the noise floor (down to -20dB or lower), turning a few watts into a voice that can span the globe. By tracking greyline propagation and seizing the peaks of Solar Cycle 25, even the simplest wire antenna can bridge the distance between Japan and the US East Coast.
To our fellow DXers across the ocean: We may be small, and our signals may be faint. But our passion for the airwaves is boundless. Please keep an ear out for the weak, fleeting signals drifting from this island in the East. Behind every decoded callsign is a ham radio operator smiling in front of a modest station, thrilled to have connected with you.
    Thank you, and 73!

    20260820 DXING?

    20260820  DXING?

    Hello all.

It seems that conditions in Japan have entered a "summer slump," making it difficult to enjoy DXing as much as I’d like.

While conditions were excellent every day from April through early August, the past week has been tough, with only brief windows of opportunity.
