8J1RL is one of amateur radio club station of The Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL), located at the Japanese research station "SHOWA" in Antarctica, and operators are member of The Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition team (JARE).

SYOWA station was founded on January 1957.
JARL was licensed as specially call “8J1RL” in 1965.
7th JARE (JARE7) started on the air by 8J1RL in 1966.
Now, 8J1RL has been operating through the year by JARE wintering members.
Wintering members are change every year in February, so we issue different beautiful QSL cards annually.
