I was first licensed (age 13) as KN9ZXG in the summer of 1960, a few months before starting high school in an area west of Chicago. We had a little radio club (W9BXU) in the school of which K9KDI (N9SW) was our top DX'er. I am currently a member of the N.I.D.X.A., the A-1 Operator Club, the FISTS CW Club, and the CW Operators' Club. My four passions (hobbies in order of preference/obsession) are music, collecting butterflies, ham radio, and collecting agates. I have actually maintained a real connection between chasing DX/collecting QSLs and chasing butterflies/collecting specimens worldwide. I would like to hear from anyone out there that chases DX and lepidoptera (especially Speyeria).
My current setup includes an FTDX5000MP/TS-940S/TS-950SDX and an Alpha 87A (Omega)/TL-922A to a Steppir 18E Dream Beam up only 50 feet. A sloper for 160/80m and a large tropical butterfly net with a 30 foot extension are also used on occasion. I have achieved 9B-DXCC, DXCC HR (ssb and cw), and WAZ on 7 bands. Finally, after 47 years, I managed to work all current entities. My current projects are extending the DXCC Challenge and attempting to get close to a 5-Band WAZ ( I'll never get it, needing 3 on 80m). Being of Eastern European descent (9A/SP), for years I have enjoyed calling CQ Europe and meeting many European operators on cw.
I have become a serious collector of vintage/current DX QSL's, having put together a collection of 280,000 strong and am the trustee of the Vintage QSL Radio Club, K9ZXG. Before my passing, my intentions are to donate the card collection to the Austrian QSL Museum that houses over 9 million cards (with all the French related cards to be donated to the F6GOX French collection). In the meantime, several of the duplicates will be sold/traded - not for profit, rather for the improvement of the collection.
On a personal level, I am a retired high school math teacher, living with wife, Marisia (a nurse), and daughter, Beth. (Our only child was born with Down Syndrome and has been an absolute joy to raise these 26 years. Although we never expected her to leave the nest, she however has other plans and now is preparing to wed.)
My DXCC totals from the "W9 black hole": Mixed 356 ssb 353 cw 348 (right handed 348 left handed 123) 20m 354 15m 348 40m 342 10m 332 17m 328 12m 314 30m 313 80m 269 160m 174 6m 034 QRP 282 Challenge 2743. Just kidding- I can't use an iambic keyer left handed although it sounds like it at times. "Good Hunting".
