Slovenia (Listeni/slˈvniə/ sloh-vee-nee-əSloveneSlovenijaAbout this sound [sloˈveːnija]), officially the Republic of Slovenia (Republika SlovenijaAbout this sound [reˈpublika sloˈveːnija]), is a nation state situated in Central Europe[13][Note 2], at the crossroad of main European cultural and trade routes.[18][19] It borders Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Croatia to the south and southeast and Hungary to the northeast.[20] It covers 20,273 square kilometres (7,827 sq mi) and has a population of 2.05 million.[21] It is a parliamentary republic[22] and a member of the European Union and NATO[23] Relative to its geography, history, economy, culture, and language, it is a very diverse country distinguished by a transitional character.[24] It is characterised by a high economic and social level.[25] Its capital and largest city is Ljubljana.[26]
Four major European geographic units meet on the territory of Slovenia: the Alps, the Dinaric Alps, theMediterranean, with a small portion of coastline along the Adriatic Sea, and the Pannonian Plain.[27][28]The territory has a mosaic structure and an exceptionally high landscape[28] and biological[29][30] diversity, which are a result of natural attributes and the long-term presence of humans.[31] Although the climate in the mainly hilly[27] territory is influenced by the continental climate, the Slovene Littoral enjoys the sub-Mediterranean climate, while the Alpine climate is found in the north-western part of the country.[32]The country is one of the most water-rich in Europe,[33] with a dense river network, a rich aquifer system, and significant karstic underground watercourses.[34] Over half of the territory is covered by forest.[35]
The settlement of Slovenia is dispersed and uneven.[36] The SlavicGermanicRomance and Finno-Ugriclinguistic and cultural groups meet here.[37][38][39] The dominant population is Slovene, although it has almost never been homogenous.[40] Slovene is the only official language throughout the country, whereasItalian and Hungarian are regional minority languages. Slovenia is a largely secularised country,[41] but its culture and identity have been significantly influenced by Roman Catholicism as well as Lutheranism.[42]The economy of Slovenia is small, open, export-oriented[43] and subsequently, strongly influenced by international conditions.[44] It has been severely hurt by the European economic crisis, started in late 2000s.[45] The main economic field is services, followed by industry and construction.[46] Many Slovenians reach top sport successes, particularly in winter sportswater sportsmountaineering, and endurance sports.[47]
Historically, the current territory of Slovenia was part of many different state formations, including theRoman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, followed by the Austria-Hungary Empire. In 1918, the Slovenes exercised self-determination for the first time by co-founding the internationally unrecognizedState of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs, which merged into Yugoslavia. During World War II, Slovenia was occupied and annexed by GermanyItalyHungary, and Croatia.[48] Afterward, it was a founding member of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
After nearly five decades of Communist rule, in June 1991, after the introduction of multi-partyrepresentative democracy, Slovenia became an independent country.[7] In 2004, it entered NATO and the European Union, in 2007 became the first former Communist country to join the Eurozone,[49] and in 2010 joined the OECD, a global association of high-income developed countries.[50]

Diego Garcia is a tropical, footprint-shaped coral atoll located south of the equator in the central Indian Ocean. It is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).
The atoll is approximately 1,970 nautical miles (3,650 km) east of the coast of Africa (at Tanzania), 967 nautical miles (1,790 km) south-southwest of the southern tip of India (at Kanyakumari) and 2,550 nautical miles (4,720 km) west-northwest of the west coast of Australia (at Cape Range National ParkWestern Australia). Diego Garcia lies in the Chagos Archipelago at the southernmost tip of the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge – a vast submarine range in the Indian Ocean,[2] topped by a long chain of coral reefs, atolls, and islands comprising LakshadweepMaldives, and the Chagos Archipelago. Local time is UTC+06:00 year-round (DST is not observed).[3]
The US Navy operates Naval Support Facility (NSF) Diego Garcia, a large naval ship and submarine support base, military air base, communications and space-tracking facility, and an anchorage for pre-positioned military supplies for regional operations aboard Military Sealift Command ships in the lagoon.[4]
Mauritius sought to regain sovereignty, lost to the UK in 1965, over the Chagos Archipelago. Between 1968 and 1973, the Chagossians, then numbering about 2,000 people, were expelled by the British government to Mauritius and Seychelles to allow the United States to establish a military base on the island. Today, the exiled Chagossians are still fighting to return to their homeland, claiming that the forced expulsion and dispossession was illegal (seeDepopulation of Diego Garcia).[5][6]

Ceuta (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈθeuta]) (Arabicسبت‎) is an 18.5-square-kilometre (7.1 sq mi) autonomous city of Spain and an exclave located on the north coast of Africa and has a western border with Morocco. Separated from the Iberian peninsula by the Strait of Gibraltar, Ceuta lies on the border of the Mediterranean Sea and theAtlantic Ocean. Ceuta was deemed a part of Cadiz province prior to 14 March 1995, when the city's Statute of Autonomy was passed.
Ceuta (like Melilla) was a free port before Spain joined the European Union. As of 2011, it has a population of 78,674.[2] Its population consists of ChristiansMuslims (chiefly Moroccan Arabic speakers), and small minorities of Jews and Hindus. Spanish is the official language.
Morocco had previously called for negotiations on the future of Ceuta, Melilla and a number of Mediterranean islands and enclaves that border it. The majority of the city's population are ethnic Spanish who are opposed to the idea of being ruled by Morocco.[3] A poll conducted by Instituto Opina found that 87.9% of people from mainland Spain consider the two cities to be Spanish.[4]

Geography

Perspective view of the Strait of Gibraltarfacing eastwards; Spain and Gibraltar on the left;Morocco and Ceuta on the right
Ceuta is dominated by Monte Anyera, a hill along its western frontier with Morocco. The mountain is guarded by aSpanish fort.
Monte Hacho on the Peninsula de Almina overlooking the port is one of the possible locations for the southernPillars of Hercules, of Greek legend (the other possibility being Jebel Musa).
