Mini-DXpedition - Raivavae Island (Australs, French Polynesia) - OC-114 - CQ Zone 32 - ITU Zone 63
Grid square BG66 - S23.85 x W147.66
Grant, KZ1W, and Rob, N7QT will be heading to Raivavae Island on a suitcase mini-DXpeditionas TX5D between October 2 - 14th. We will be operating two stations with the new CrankIR portable antenna system from SteppIR, as well as Elecraft K3 transceivers and KPA500 amplifiers.
Our operational base consists of two bungalows located next to the beach on the north side of Raivavae Island, and less than 30 feet from the Raivavae lagoon. Activity will be on 80-10 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY, and PSK. All "verticals on the beach" for antennas.
Internet connectivity is limited to an Inmarsat terminal we have rented. We hope to load QSOs to ClubLog once daily.
We'd like to thank our sponsors, ElecraftSteppIR and the Western WA DX association for helping to make this DXpedition possible.
QSO GUIDELINES
We want you in our log, so please help us by following these guidelines. (plagarized from the Wake Island 2013 web site - TNX)
1. If you cannot hear us - please don't call us. Wait until propagation and conditions favor your QTH for one or more of the 11 Bands and 4 Modes. Eventually you WILL have a clear path to Raivavae. Be patient.
2. Unless you hear otherwise from the Operator, we will ALWAYS be operating in SPLIT MODE throughout the DXpedition.
3. Listen to the Operator for RX frequencies (e.g., "up 5 to10", or "listening on 7.155", etc.)
4. Try to listen more, talk less. Be patient.
5. During SSB pileups, please announce your full call clearly -- ONCE -- using standard phonetics. When we try to fill partials, call us ONLY if it applies to your call.
6. During ALL pileups, listen for YOUR call on the comeback.
7. Please do not Tune Up on any of our TX frequencies or any of our RX slots!
8. When we call "by the numbers" or for a specific region, DON'T call unless "you are there".
9. PLEASE, no "insurance" QSOs. We want to maximize your chances for a QSO. We are limited to a satellite phone/IP link and will try to update ClubLog daily (at $7/MB!). Check first and if you were missed or mis-logged, wait 36 hours before calling again.
10. PLEASE limit the exchange to DXpedition content only = "59 + call sign + TNX". Please NO names, QTH, weather, and brags as this will only slow down our QSO rate. Doubly so when we are in digital modes.
11. Whenever possible, we will try to listen in the General portion of the band. We may be below the US band allocations for SSB as we will be in IARU Region 3. Our operating period substantially overlaps with the large Wake Island 2013 DXpedition, so we plan to stay away from their posted frequencies and splits.
We want you in our log. Please help us get you there.
PROPAGATION
For propagation from your QTH to Raivavae, click on this link
Thanks to Stu, K6TU for establishing this page for our DXpedition, see K6TU.net for additional propagation tools.
Based on pre-departure predictions, Europe will be the most difficult path, so we plan to focus on that region at the Europe morning gray-line. Please help us make those QSOs happen! US, JA, VK/ZL, and SA have many more opportunities, so please QRX when we call for EU(Europe), ME(Middle East), or AF(Africa) only.
We will have two stations with 500w amps, but there are only two of us and sleep is sometimes needed, but we will try to maximize air time.

Picture: Ndali vanilla factory, Nr Fort Portal
QRV since Nov 2007. Not a dxpedition - I work pro bono while in Uganda. On the air from the University of the Mountains of the Moon (MMU) in Fort Portal, Western Uganda and (occasionally) the capital, Kampala. Fort Portal is in the foothills of the beautiful Rwenzori Mountains which form the border with the Congo (about 25 kms away). It is a fertile area with a fine climate - a major local cash crop is tea. MMU is an independent (non-profit) university owned by the community of the area. Next visit is September 2013 for 8 weeks.
Main ham radio challenges are frequent thunderstorms and static which make low bands hard work. Also erratic power - which frequently goes off without any warning and may stay off for many hours. It can provide as little as 160 volts (instead of 240). Internet connectivity has improved greatly in the past 5 years. I prefer CW but am also QRV on SSB and digimodes. My usual rig is a K3 with a variety of antennas - (sometimes) a single band 2 el Moxon beam, (always) an inverted v dipole with links for all bands and (possibly) an all band Hexbeam in 2013. I use LOTW.
All QSL routes are OK except e-QSL. I prefer use of OQRS via Clublog. I send cards only when I am in UK so you may have to await my return if in Uganda. Please do NOT ask for another bureau card via ClubLog if you have already sent one via the bureau - cards are expensive and I have to pay for them! Thanks.

Direct QSLs please via home call G3RWF. Please enclose an IRC or $2 (sorry but $1 no longer covers the cost of a stamp anywhere). Also bureau OK but will take a while (and please put as many QSOs as possible on one card to reduce weight and make replying easier). I only reply to QSOs for each new band.
Please do not e mail me to ask me to check my log.I usually upload toLOTW and Clublog daily.I would rather be on the air than hunting through my log when I am in Uganda! Thanks.

I actively support the DX Code (http://www.dx-code.org/link.htm)
