The Dominican Republic (Listeni/dəˌmɪnɨkən rɨˈpʌblɪk/SpanishRepública Dominicana [reˈpuβlika ðominiˈkana],FrenchRépublique Dominicaine [ʁepyˈblik dɔminiˈkɛn]) is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that are shared by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48,442 square kilometres (18,704 sq mi) and an estimated 10 million people.[3][9]
Taínos inhabited what is now the Dominican Republic since the 7th century. Christopher Columbus landed on it in 1492, and it became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821. The ruler, José Núñez de Cáceres, intended that the Dominican Republic be part of the nation of Gran Colombia, but he was quickly removed by the Haitian government and "Dominican" slave revolts. Victorious in the Dominican War of Independence in 1844, Dominicans experienced mostly internal strife, and also a brief return to Spanish rule, over the next 72 years. The United States occupation of 1916–1924, and a subsequent calm and prosperous six-year period under Horacio Vásquez Lajara, were followed by the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina until 1961. The civil war of 1965, the country's last, was ended by a U.S.-led intervention, and was followed by the authoritarian rule of Joaquín Balaguer, 1966–1978. Since then, the Dominican Republic has moved toward representative democracy,[2] and has been led by Leonel Fernández for most of the time after 1996. Danilo Medina Dominican Republic's current president replaced former president Leonel Fernández holding 51% of the Electoral Vote over his opponent ex-president Hipolito Mejia in 2012.[10]
The Dominican Republic has the ninth largest economy in Latin America and the second largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region.[11][12] Though long known for sugar production, the economy is now dominated by services.[2] The country's economic progress is exemplified by its advanced telecommunication system.[13] Nevertheless, unemployment,[2] government corruption, and inconsistent electric service remain major Dominican problems. The country also has "marked income inequality".[2] International migration affects the Dominican Republic greatly, as it receives and sends large flows of migrants. Haitian immigration and the integration of Dominicans of Haitian descent are major issues.[14] A large Dominican diaspora exists, most of it in the United States.[15] They aid national development as they send billions of dollars to their families, accounting for one-tenth of the Dominican GDP.[2][16]
The Dominican Republic has become the Caribbean's largest tourist destination, especially in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Santo Domingo. The country's year-round golf courses are among the top attractions on the island.[13]In this mountainous land is located the Caribbean's highest mountain, Pico Duarte, as is Lake Enriquillo, the Caribbean's largest lake and lowest elevation.[17] Quisqueya, as Dominicans often call their country, has an average temperature of 26 °C (78.8 °F) and great biological diversity.[13] Music and sport are of great importance in the Dominican culture, with merengue as the national dance and music, and baseball as the favorite sport.[3]

Geography

Location of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean

In green (with red legend) are the constituent parts of the Guadeloupe région/département among the Leeward Islands

Map of the Guadeloupe archipelago
Located as the southernmost of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean Sea, Guadeloupe comprises two main islands: Basse-Terre Island and Grande-Terre (separated from Basse-Terre by a narrow sea channel called Salt River). The adjacent French islands of La DésiradeLes Saintes, and Marie-Galante are under jurisdiction of Guadeloupe.
Western Basse-Terre has a rough volcanic relief while eastern Grande-Terre features rolling hills and flat plains.[ambiguous]
Further to the north, Saint-Barthélemy and the northern French part of Saint Martin were previously under the jurisdiction of Guadeloupe but on 7 December 2003, both of these areas voted to become an overseas territorial collectivity, a decision which took effect on 22 February 2007.[7]

[edit]Hurricanes

The island was devastated by several hurricanes in modern times:
  • On 12 September 1928, the Okeechobee hurricane caused extensive damage and killed thousands of people.
  • On 22 August 1964, Guadeloupe was ravaged by Hurricane Cleo, which killed 14 people.
  • On 27 September 1966, Category 3 Hurricane Inez caused extensive damage, mostly in Grande-Terre and north Basse-Terre Island, killing 33 people. Charles De Gaulle visited the islands after the hurricanes and declared them a disaster area.
  • On 17 September 1989, Category 4 Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage, destroyed 10,000 homes leaving more than 35,000 homeless. It destroyed 100 percent of the banana crop, and 60 percent of the sugar cane crop.
  • From late August to mid September 1995, the island was in the path of three successive cyclones: Tropical Storm Iris on 28 August caused minor damages; Hurricane Luis on 5 September caused moderate damage on the north coast of Grande-Terre; and Hurricane Marilynon 15 September caused moderate damage in Basse-Terre.
  • On 21 September 1998, Hurricane Georges pounded the islands, causing moderate damage and destroying 90% of the banana crop.

a few words about me
My name is Alex Frolov. I was born in 1982 in Mingechevir town, not small town in central part of Azerbaijan republic, which is situated 280km west from capital city Baku. I entered to 1st class of secondary scholl when i was 7 yrs old, and study there about 11 years. And now I became a student of Azerbaijanian Technical University. In which I was entered in 1999 year. My father is Yuri Frolov, callsign-4J3M. From him, I was learned "What is radio". hi =) I got my license on 5th of may 1997. But my first QSO in my life I was made on 26 of september 1990 at club station with callsign RD7DWW. Then I didn't know morse code. And in 1999 after approx. 3 weeks i was learned telegraphy well. My biography is not very big as you see. But i will try to refresh it sometimes.
After New Year's holidays (2002) i've got new license with new call 4J3DJ, and i can work almost on all bands and modes.
(added on 15th june 2007)
At June of 2003 i graduate Azerbaijanian Technical University with bachelor degree and entered to Azerbaijan State Economical University to get Magister degree. At 2005 summer i've got it well.
Also at 2003 i started doing my another hobby: Dee Jaying. As a DJ, I took part in two national Dee-Jay's competitions. Went to many cities of Russia and capital city of Georgia - TBILISI. Music and Dee Jaying is my loved hobby same as HAM radio.
But most of you can think that "DJ" in my callsign means my second hobby Deejaying. But is not like that. My father's ex call was UD6DJ (USSR time). That is why i took such kind of suffix in my callsign.
On 13th of January 2007, I get married and she is from Russia. And we have son. His name is Kirill. (Key-Real) :)
I was active from october 31,2011 till november 4, 2011 on my vacation.
From today December 10,2012 till December 15, 2012 I will be active on all bands, exept 160 meter band.
Thats all for now i will try to refresh my bio sometime!!! See you on air. 73!

Azerbaijan (Listeni/ˌæzərbˈɑːn/ az-ər-by-jahnAzerbaijaniAzərbaycan), officially the Republic of Azerbaijan(AzerbaijaniAzərbaycan Respublikası) is the largest country in the Caucasus region located at the crossroads ofWestern Asia and Eastern Europe.[5] It is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short borderline with Turkey to the northwest.
Azerbaijan has an ancient and historic cultural heritage, including the distinction of being the first Muslim-majority country to have operas, theater and plays.[6] The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was established in 1918, but was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1920.[7][8] Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991. Shortly thereafter, during the Nagorno-Karabakh War, neighboring Armenia occupied Nagorno-Karabakhits surrounding territoriesand the enclaves of KarkiYukhary AskiparaBarkhudarly and Sofulu. The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which emerged in Nagorno-Karabakh, continues to be not diplomatically recognized by any nation and the region is still considered a de jure part of Azerbaijan, despite being de facto independent since the end of the war.[9][10][11][12]
Azerbaijan is a unitary constitutional republic. It is one of the six independent Turkic states as well as an active member of the Turkic Council and the TÜRKSOY community. Azerbaijan has diplomatic relations with 158 countries and holds membership in 38 international organizations.[13] It is one of the founding members of GUAM, theCommonwealth of Independent States (CIS)[14] and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. A member of the United Nations since 1992, Azerbaijan was elected to membership in the newly established Human Rights Council by the United Nations General Assembly on May 9, 2006 (the term of office began on June 19, 2006).[15] The country is also a member of the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the NATO Partnership for Peace(PfP) program. Azerbaijan is a correspondent at the International Telecommunication Union and member of theNon-Aligned Movement and holds observer status in World Trade Organization.[13][16]
The Constitution of Azerbaijan does not declare an official religion, and all major political forces in the country are secular nationalist, but the majority of people and some opposition movements adhere to Shia Islam.[17] Relative to other Eastern European and CIS states, Azerbaijan has reached a high level of human development,[18] economic development[19] and literacy,[20] as well as a low rate of unemployment[21] and intentional homicide.[22][23] On 1 January 2012, the country started a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.[24]
