Friendly greetings from my station in central South Africa. I've become an unrestricted Radio Amateur in 2003 with the call of ZS4JAN. My elmer, now silent key was OM Frans Heidler ZS4AE. He helped me from the age of 10 years. My main activities is HF contesting, DX, QRP and hunting awards in the following modes - SSB, CW, AM, PSK31. My contest/special event call is ZT4T. I am a Yaesu collector and enjoy collecting glass bottles (valves) for display. When I'm not infront of my radios, I'm busy homebrewing or designing new electronic projects.

I am the owner of a HF QRPp unmanned CW beacon on 7.027 MHz. The beacon callsign is ZS0BOT. This beacon is solar powered and controllable from the GSM network. I designed, software written/programmed and build it myself. The beacon is registered and licensed as an unmanned device by the Independant Communications Authority of South Africa. The transmitting power output is 50mWatt into a NVIS antenna. The beacon message is transmitted at 5 wpm in an endless loop. RST reports is appreciated if you do copy this beacon. If you require detailed information and photos regarding the ZS0BOT beacon, please visitZS0BOT@QRZ.com.

My small valve display. The two ceramic valves on the left rear is used for our local VHF television transmitter. This transmitter is one of two valve transmitters left in South Africa. The valve in the left rear corner is used for 10Kwatt video, and the valve infront of him is used for 1KWatt audio. Infront middle is a 6146 valve, and can be used to compare the sizes of valves in the display.
My station currently is not surrounded by big antennas, but there is a few projects inline. The contest station consist of 2x Yaesu FT1000MP in SO2R config. The SO2R controller is the Super Combo Keyer mk2 from ZS4TX (the best). Audio is supplied by HEIL Pro set 4 and HEIL Goldline GM5. The logging and station control is handled by N1MM (the best). Master and general logging is handled by WINLOG 32. All RS232 data is controlled by serial to usb converters, even for audio control. There is no need for extra filters due to the low TX power. I have a seperate station for QRP field contesting which is alot of fun.

Contest corner and SO2R setup. 2x Yaesu FT1000MP, Super Combo Keyer 2 & HEIL Goldline GM5 for DX. The FT1000MP on the right generated a few world records, and was in Finland for the WRTC. These records was achieved by Bernie ZS4TX and Chris ZS6EZ. I am the fourth contester using this radio with zero repairs, and lots of contest wall paper.
The Yaesu collection starts from 1956 with the FL/FR100, FT200 (grey enclosure) complete, FT901DM (biggest collection to date) complete, FT707 complete, FT230R, 2x FT208R, FT847, FT920, 2x FT1000MP, FL2100B, VL1000. The complete collection is 100% working and in daily use. All of them has won a 1st place in a contest. My equipment is in mint original collectors condition with no modifications. There is also a complete Kenwood TS120V station for QRP activities. An original Collins KWM2 with acc. ends my collection.

QRP field station in the African outdoors

Field day station in the caravan. Yaesu FT920 with rig control to DELL laptop computer, HEIL Pro Set4, 210 A/H Deltec battery pack & 150 Watt AC inverter for laptop.
I am active in all CQWW, WPX, ARRL, RSGB and SARL contests in SSB, CW, AM and PSK31. Listen out for that little signal in the distance, it will most likely be me. I am the founder of the ZS Contest Group, and a member of the African team in the RSGB Commonwealth. I am a member of Fox Tango International and the South African Radio League.
I upload my log to LOTW and eQSL.cc once a month.

A look at the ZS9X contest station with the contesters during the 2009 IARU

Thank you
ZS4JAN, ZT4T and ZS0BOT/beacon
