This is the QRZ page for the South African Radio League Special Event Station commemorating the life and recent passing of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, elder statesman and first democratically-elected president of the Republic of South Africa. Affectionately referred to as “Madiba”, he became one of the most recognized leaders in the world and was instrumental in the peaceful transition of South Africa from minority rule to a constitutional democracy. South Africans join the people of the world in mourning his passing and celebrating his legacy.
ZS9MADIBA will be operational until the 11th of January 2014, at times and on frequencies to be determined. We will be operating on HF bands from 160m to 10m, on SSB, CW and digital modes.
QSLs will be confirmed via the ARRL Logbook of the World (LoTW), and a special event paper QSL.
Watch for updates here!
(Headline photo courtesy of wikipedia.com)

We apologize for the hiccups in getting the QRZ page running; all QSOs logged until now will be acknowledged.

QSL Direct : NO IRC's please; as they are not honoured locally.

Due to substantially increased postal rates --
North, Central & South America -destinations -US$2.00
Europe, Africa, Asia and PacificRim - destinations -US$3.00 per request.

If at all possible, send 'self stick' type envelopes with the protected adhesive strip for the return card. The humidity seals all regular ones shut, and I have to pry them loose. Not a pretty sight!

noPlease Note: VP8LP does not respond to people who call using only their suffix.nocrying
Good operating tip would be to give your full callsign once, then listen 4-5 seconds to see if I have heard you or am replying to someone else before you make a second call.yes
noI consider stations who call - call - call repeatedly without pausing to listen to be QRMers angry
angryand will be ignored.angry

Please note I do not upload logs electronically. The reason for this is because requests were coming in for uploads to too many different QSL systems, for example LOTW, EQSL, QRZ, Clublog and so on. There is alwaysa huge amount of email requests associated with log uploads and my hobby is amateur radio, not email, so I have decided I will not upload to any systems to avoid this increasing problem.
I have also recently had a number of Bureau cards returned undelivered, which is a waste of cards and effort, so unfortunately I have to say I will no longer respond to cards sent via the Bureau - direct cards with sufficient postage and self addressed envelope only please.
I do apologise having come to this decision.

I am a supporter of the DX Code of Conduct:
I will listen, and listen, and then listen again before calling.
I will only call if I can copy the DX station properly.
I will not trust the DX cluster and will be sure of the DX station's call sign before calling.
I will not interfere with the DX station nor anyone calling and will never tune up on the DX frequency or in the QSX slot.
I will wait for the DX station to end a contact before I call.
I will always send my full call sign.
I will call and then listen for a reasonable interval. I will not call continuously.
I will not transmit when the DX operator calls another call sign, not mine.
I will not transmit when the DX operator queries a call sign not like mine.
I will not transmit when the DX station requests geographic areas other than mine.
When the DX operator calls me, I will not repeat my call sign unless I think he has copied it incorrectly.
I will be thankful if and when I do make a contact.
I will respect my fellow hams and conduct myself so as to earn their respect.
