I was first licenced in March 1973.  I came on the air with a Heathkit HW-101 Transceiver and a G5RV antenna.  The HW 101 was later replaced with a Yaesu FT-101B Transceiver, and a home made 3 Band 2 Element Cubical Quad completed the antenna farm.In 1977 other pursuits had to be given priority, and I became inactive.  I sold my station in the same year and I was QRT.  I never imagined at the time, it would be 27 years before I would be back on the air again.
In January 2004 I was able to return to the hobby.  My Station comprised of an Icom-746, and once again a G5RV antenna.  What a joy it was to be back on the air!  Later, a Carolina Windom 80, and a Carolina Windom 80 Special replaced the G5RV.
Having retired in October 2006 after a 44-year career in the Public Service, I now have more time to play radio.  There have also been a number of changes to the station since 2004 as well.
My current station comprises – a 5 Band Heavy Duty Spiderbeam at 10 meters above ground. (I still have my Carolina Windoms).  A Yaesu FT-950, and a Yaesu FT-450.
Since putting up the Spiderbeam, entries in my log have certainly increased from the many pile-ups I have been in.  My favourites bands are 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters.  I also get on 40 meters occasionally.

I do not chase DX.  I have no need to really.  I work whoever comes along.  I simply enjoy giving Hams a chance to put a ZD7 in their logs.  I respond to all requests for QSL Cards providing they are accompanied by 2 US Dollars (or Euro or Sterling notes) and an SAE.   PLEASE! do not send coins or stamps.  AND do not QSL via VE1AIH who was my QSL Manager.  (He is now a Silent Key anyway).  Getting a card back to you could take 3-8 weeks, this is beyond my control, as ZD7 land does not have an air service.  So please be patient.

Angola, officially the Republic of Angola (PortugueseRepública de Angolapronounced: [ʁɨˈpublikɐ dɨ ɐ̃ˈɡɔla];[5]KikongoKimbunduUmbunduRepubilika ya Ngola), is a country in Southern Africa bordered by Namibia on the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and Zambia on the east; its west coast is on the Atlantic Ocean with Luanda as its capital city. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congoand the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Portuguese were present in some—mostly coastal—points of the territory of what is now Angola, from the 16th to the 19th century, interacting in diverse ways with the peoples that lived there. In the 19th century they slowly and hesitantly began to establish themselves in the interior. Angola as a Portuguese colony encompassing the present territory was not established before the end of the 19th century, and "effective occupation", as required by theBerlin Conference (1884) was achieved only by the 1920s. Independence was achieved in 1975, after a protracted liberation war. After independence, Angola was the scene of an intense civil war from 1975 to 2002. The country has vast mineral and petroleum reserves, and its economy has on average grown at a two-digit pace since the 1990s, especially since the end of the civil war. In spite of this, standards of living remain low for the majority of the population, and life expectancy and infant mortality rates in Angola are among the worst-ranked in the world.[6]Angola is considered to be economically disparate, with the majority of the nation's wealth concentrated in a disproportionately small sector of the population.

Djibouti (Arabicجيبوتي‎ JībūtīFrenchDjiboutiSomaliJabuutiAfarGabuuti), officially the Republic of Djibouti(Arabicجمهورية جيبوتي‎ Jumhūriyyat JībūtīFrenchRépublique de DjiboutiAfarGabuutih UmmuunoSomali:Jamhuuriyadda Jabuuti), is a country in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somalia in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden at the east. Islam is the largest religion in the country, practiced by 94% of the population.[3] The land was known as French Somaliland in the 19th century; in 1967, it changed its name to Afars and Issas after new treaties with France. The territory was declared an independent nation in 1977 and changed its name to the "Republic of Djibouti" after its principal city. Djibouti joined the United Nations on September 20, 1977.[4][5]

Geography

Lac Assal area.
Djibouti is situated in Northeast Africa on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. It lies between latitudes 10° and 13°N, and longitudes 41° and 44°E. The country's coastline stretches 314 kilometres (195 miles), with terrain consisting mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands. Djibouti has a total area of 23,200 square kilometres (8,958 sq mi). Its borders extend 506 km, 113 km of which are shared with Eritrea, 337 km with Ethiopia, and 58 km with Somalia.
There is not much seasonal variation in Djibouti's climate. Hot conditions prevail year-round along with winter rainfalls. Mean daily maximum temperatures range from 32 to 41 °C (90 to 106 °F), except at high elevations, where the effects of a cold offshore current can be felt. In Djibouti city, for instance, average afternoon highs range from 28 °C (82 °F) to 34 °C (93 °F) in April. Nationally, mean daily minimums usually vary from about 15 to 30 °C (59 to 86 °F). The greatest range in climate occurs in eastern Djibouti, where temperatures sometimes surpass 41 °C (106 °F) in July on the littoral plains and the freezing point during December in the highlands. In this region, relative humidity ranges from about 40% in the mid-afternoon to 85% at night, changing somewhat according to the season.
Djibouti's climate ranges from arid in the northeastern coastal regions to semiarid in the central, northern, western and southern parts of the country. On the eastern seaboard, annual rainfall is less than 5 inches (131 mm); in the central highlands, it is about 8 to 11 inches (200 to 300 mm). Although the coastal regions are hot and humid throughout the year, the hinterland is typically hot and dry.

Belgium (Listeni/ˈbɛləm/ bel-jəm), officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a federal state in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the EU's headquarters, and those of several other major international organisations such as NATO.[nb 1]Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi), and it has a population of about 11 million people. Straddling the cultural boundary betweenGermanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups, the Dutch-speakers (about 60%), mostly Flemish, and the French-speakers (about 40%), mostly Walloons, plus a small group of German-speakers. Belgium's two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region.[7] A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia.[8] Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in the political history and a complex system of government.[9][10]
Historically, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg were known as the Low Countries, which used to cover a somewhat larger area than the current Benelux group of states. The region was called Belgica in Latin because of the Roman province Gallia Belgica which covered more or less the same area. From the end of theMiddle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. From the 16th century until the Belgian Revolution in 1830, when Belgium seceded from the Netherlands, many battles between European powers were fought in the area of Belgium, causing it to be dubbed the "cockfighting arenaof Europe,"[11] a reputation strengthened by both World Wars.
Upon its independence, Belgium participated in the Industrial Revolution[12][13] and, during the course of the 20th century, possessed a number of colonies in Africa.[14] The second half of the 20th century was marked by the rise of contrasts between the Flemish and the Francophones fuelled by differences of language and theunequal economic development of Flanders and Wallonia. This ongoing antagonism has caused far-reaching reforms, changing the formerly unitary Belgian state into a federal state, and several governmental crises, themost recent from 2007 to 2011 being the longest.
