About Umeå2014
Umeå2014 is a window to all of Europe. We will use it to show that we are one of the foremost culture-driven cities in Europe. Before, during and after 2014 cultural exchanges between Umeå and the rest of Europe will increase. This means that Europe has an opportunity to become acquainted with Umeå’s cultural scene. It is also an opportunity to establish bonds with new European friends for us.
Raising northern Sweden’s European profile
In its verdict, the jury cited Umeå’s ambition to make the city and northern Sweden more visible in Europe and to use culture as a driving force in regional development. The jury was unanimous in recommending Umeå as European Capital of Culture 2014. Umeå was a truly great cultural city even before selection as capital of culture. Thus, 2014 will be used to step up the pace and become even sharper.
A programme of co-creation
“Co-creation” is the key word in Umeå2014’s capital of culture initiative. Here, the concept means that everyone can participate and contribute to the programme. To promote a long-term perspective and encourage the continuance of capital of culture activities beyond 2014, it is intended that projects should be run by the “cultural operators” themselves.
An Umeå2014 team will be receiving suggestions, coordinating activities and granting funds. However, it cannot manage projects. In other words, most of our capital of culture activities will be run by associations, organisations, cultural institutions and other interested parties.
We continue to create together after 2014
Umeå2014 is mostly about expanding upon the dynamic cultural scene that Umeå already has. And when 2014 ends, what we have created will continue to be put to use – for many years to come

Hello, I am Jaime or "Jim", I am now retired but I used to work for the Telephone Company keeping communications submarine cables at ground stations in Mallorca. I have got my license as Radio Amateur from 1981 and since then I have been always active, my main interest in Radio is DXing for DXCC, CW, SSB and RTTY from 160M to 6M, it is easy to find me on CW (99%) 20, 30 and 40M.I try to work 160M but I live in a small QTH 30m by 15m size, so no place for good antennas, also I suffer from very bad QRM, I have nearby 3 BC AM one at 2 KM with 60KW and two 10KW, also a big Power-Station at the side which supply power to Palma, so sorry if I can not hear you, QRM is about "9" on 160M, "7" on 80M, but I try very hard. I am very interested also in new technology, equipments and antennas.
My station: Rigs are: a new FT-5000MP, Elecraft K3 plus P3 and Flex 5000. Amps are Expert 1K linear and an old Drake L7. And a lot of old accessories.
My antennas: I have an 18m crank-up tower over a small flat terrace 4m high, a 3 El SteppIR with 40-30m Dipole at 22m, two Half Sloper for 80m, one loaded with a coil and folded for 160m, to keep it in my small QTH . For 6m is a 7EL M2 yagi at 25m. The tower is Shunt-Fed for 160m with 4 Folded Elevated Radials, connected 6m high. A Hy-Gain multiband Vertical AV-640 that is used only in RX for Diversity.
Also a 30m long Multiband Dipole in vee configuration 19m high, fed with 450 Ohm line and MFJ -998R remote ATU, tunes well from 80 to 10m as a reserve antenna and actual 60m antenna. I have mountains from West to East that blocks my signals to part of this areas so quite difficult DXing.

QSL update: I have to apologize but I am a bit behind answering the QSL requests (due to personal circumstances). I plan to clear the back logas soon as possible. Sorry for delay. The PZ5T, TO2U, FP/VE3DZ, V31UZ, ZF1DZ, N2WCQ/6W1, PZ5TT, VE2IMand VE3DZ/VP9 LOGs are on LOTW now. Also, due to the high work load and travel volume I will not be able to reply to individual e-mails (something like - "Please look if you already mailed my card", or "Would you please check if I am in your LOG".). I apologize for that, I simply don't have time to go through all the boxes with cards and through all my LOGs. If you mailed your card, you will receive a reply eventually!
Got involved with HAM Radio in 1974 at the age of 13. We had a club station at my High School and my older sister'sclass mate was one of the operators (UK4LAC).
I made my first QSO was with UK7JAC from Kazakhstan in September of 1974, and on that same day I had few more SSB contacts, including a big DX for me at that time - LU1DVR. I got hooked up right away and by the end of 1974 I completed Morse Codecourse at the local Youth and Pioneers Palace and was able to participate in the first CW Contest on my own - RAEM CW in December of 1974. BTW, my first ever Contest was CQ WW DX SSB 1974 (as one of the ops of UK4LAC M/S effort) and first CW Contest was CQ WW DX CW 1974 as a part of UK4LAA M/S Team. Got my first own license in 1977 with personal call UA4LAR. Before 1977 I was very active S.W.L. mailing out hundreds of cards a year.
While studying at the Kiev Polytechnical Institute (now Kiev Technical University) I was one of the most active operators of UK5UDX Club Station. Later in the 80s and early 90s I was the Chief and Trustee of the Club Station at the Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers in Kiev, Ukraine - UT4UXW (RT1U, RY1U).
Moved to Canada in 1998, former call - VA3UZ (1998-2002). Changed it to VE3DZ in May of 2002, because a lot of people would confuse VA3 with UA3 on the air...Also holding VE2IM call sign which I mostly use for my annual trips to Zone 2 in Northern Quebec, as well as VO1AAM and VY2IA.
Lived in Toronto for over 14 years, but life goes on and now I live in the beautiful Niagara-On-The-Lake area, 15 minutes drive from Niagara Falls, ON and 25 minutes drive from Buffalo, N.Y. My other active calls are: 6Y2T, 8P9AA (8P3A), CG3DZ, CK3DZ, FP/VE3DZ, HC2TDZ, N2WCQ, PZ5T, UT4UZ, V31UZ, VC3T, VE2IM, VE3DZ/VP9, VO1AAM, VY2IA, ZF1DZ Ex- 6W1/N2WCQ, 8P4A, 8P9AL, 9N1UZ, CF3UZ, CT8/VE3DZ, EM4U, HD2T, KB2PBJ, OH1/VE3DZ , PP5/VE3DZ,S5/VA3UZ, PZ5TT, R3/VE3DZ, RT1U, RY1U, RY2U, TO2U (FP), UA4LAR, UB5XCM, UJ8/UB5XCM, US9D, VA3UZ, VE3DZ/VP9, VP9FOC, XL3UZ, XM3DZ... etc. WRTC (participated as competitor in 6 so far): 1996 - K6K, 2000 - S523W, 2002 - OJ6E, 2006 - PW5X, 2010 - R33L, 2014 - K1D. Only missed the 1st one in 1990 in Seattle, WA. Best result - # 4 in 2006 (in Brazil). Operated at UK4LAC (74-79), UK5UDX (79-84), UK3AAC (79-80), 4J1FS('92) - M V Island, RJ6R('84) - Tadjikistan (now EY), OT6T('96) ,PA6WPX('96), XL3D('99), VE3EJ(98-00), ZF2NT('03), K3LR ('04), VE3RM ('11), CU5AM ('12)... etc. Member: F.O.C.(#1740), CWOps (#21), Contest Club Ontario, Ukrainian Contest Club and Kiev Contest Group. My interests besides Contesting and DXing in HAM Radio include (but not limited to) travelling, soccer (football), ice hockey, music and reading.
