Vietnam (ⁱ/ˌviɪtˈnɑːm/, /viˌɛt-/, /-ˈnæm/, /ˌvjɛt-/^[8]), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam ( listen)), is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. With an estimated 87.8 million inhabitants as of 2011, it is the world's 13th-most-populous country, and the eighth-most-populous Asian country. The name Vietnam translates as "South Viet", and was officially adopted in 1945. The country is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, Cambodiato the southwest, and the South China Sea to the east.^[9] Its capital city has been Hanoi since the reunification of North and South Vietnam in 1976.

The Vietnamese became independent from Imperial China in 938 AD, following the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. Successive Vietnamese royal dynasties flourished as the nation expanded geographically and politically into Southeast Asia, until the Indochina Peninsula was colonized by the French in the mid-19th century. The First Indochina War eventually led to the expulsion of the French in 1954, leaving Vietnam divided politically into two states, North and South Vietnam. Conflict between the two sides intensified, with heavy foreign intervention, during the Vietnam War, which ended with a North Vietnamese victory in 1975.

Vietnam was then unified under a Communist government, but was politically isolated and impoverished. In 1986, the government initiated a series of economic and political reforms, which began Vietnam's path towards integration into the world economy.^[10] By 2000, it had established diplomatic relations with most nations. Its economic growth has been among the highest in the world since 2000,^[10] and according to Citigroup, such high growth is set to continue. Vietnam has the highest Global Growth Generators Indexamong 11 major economies,^[11] and its successful economic reforms resulted in it joining the World Trade Organization in 2007. However, the country still suffers from relatively high levels of income inequality, disparities in healthcare provision, and poor gender equality.^{[12][13][14][15][16]}

First licensed in March 1966 as GI3VDB. Equipment consisted of a Bendix RA1B receiver ex Catalina flying boat (!) and various ex military and home brew tx's for CW, some of which I modified to do FSK rtty. I believe I was the first GI to get BARTG QCA Award with 25 countries confirmed on RTTY.

I was QRT from around 1970 to November 2007, apart from a short period on 2m repeaters while mobile in 1990's.

Active on hf bands mostly CW, PSK31 and rtty with FT1000 Mk V Field, Icom IC-7000, all 100W max to wire antennas for 80, 40, 20m limited by suburban garden. I occasionally put up an R7 but it requires planning permission. I have an awkward neighbour who knows this, and objects, even though the antenna is not directly in her sight line.

I use Ham Radio Deluxe for rig control and logging and DM780 for data modes.

I dabble in contests on those modes to give a few points away and occasionally try to be heard in a CW pile up. I use Win-Test 4 for contest working and logging.

My preferred "QSL" method is now LOTW where I upload all logs. QSO's in eQSL are confirmed within a few days. I have no paper cards at present but am a member of the [RSGB] bureau and you will get a paper card eventually for any received.

In October 2009, I operated as 8Q7EJ Maldives which was a lot of fun. I hope to repeat that experience regularly as my wife is a Scuba Diver and Maldives is a wonderful place to dive and to operate radio.

In October 2010, I tried 8Q7EJ again from a different island. As recorded at my 8Q7EJ entry, the excellent experience of 2009 was not repeated. With the same Ground Plane antenna further from the sea and on the south side of the island, I called CQ endlessly without being heard; calling other stations produced a few QSOs but all were difficult. Location is everything.

And in early November 2011, I was back on the first island, Vilamendhoo. This time I told the hotel what I had in mind and asked for a room even nearer the sea. The 14MHz G/P was against a tree about 1m from the sea "wall". I was very lucky with sun-spots too; for the last four days of the holiday I was working the Americas, north and south, with 100W, long path at my dawn on both CW and surprisingly SSB. Hopefully back this year with good propagation and complete WAS and DXCC rom 8Q7EJ.

Chile's distinctive shape—4,300 kilometres (2,700 mi) long and on average 175 kilometres (109 mi) wide—makes it the longest country in the world in terms of length-to-width ratio, with the fifth lengthiest coastline at over 78,000 kilometres (48,000 mi).^[11] The northern desert contains great mineral wealth, principally copper. The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Today, Chile is one of South America's most stable and prosperous nations,^[14] a recognized middle power^[15] and an emerging economy.^[16] It leads Latin American nations in human development, competitiveness, income per capita, globalization, economic freedom, and low perception of corruption.^[17] It also ranks high regionally in sustainability of the state, democratic development and state of peace. Brunei ⁱ/bruːˈnaɪ/, officially the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace^[8](Malay: Negara Brunei Darussalam, Jawi: نڬارا بروني دارالسلام, Arabic: دولة بروناي، دار السلام‎), is a sovereign state located on the north coast of the island ofBorneo, in Southeast Asia. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, it is completely surrounded by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, and it is separated into two parts by the Sarawak district of Limbang. The official national history claims that Brunei can trace its beginnings to the 7th century, when it was a subject state of the Srivijayan empire under the name P'o-li. It later became a vassal state of Majapahit empire before converting to Islam in the 15th century. At the peak of its empire, the sultanate had control that extended over the coastal regions of modern-day Sarawak and Sabah, the Sulu archipelago, and the islands off the northwest tip of Borneo. The thalassocracywas visited by the remnants of the Ferdinand Magellan Expedition in 1521 after Magellan was killed some weeks earlier on 27 April of that year and fought theCastille War in 1578 against Spain. Lord Howe Island ( /ˈhaʊ/, locally /ˈhæɔ/) (formerly Lord Howe's Island) is an irregularly crescent-shaped volcanic remnant in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand, 600 kilometres (370 mi) directly east of mainland Port Macquarie, and about 900 kilometres (560 mi) from Norfolk Island. The island is about 10 km long and between 2.0 km and 0.3 km wide with an area of 14.55 km², "of which only 398 hectares is in the lowland settled area".^[6] Along the west coast there is a sandy semi-enclosed sheltered coral reef lagoon. Most of the population lives in the north, while the south is dominated by forested hills rising to the highest point on the island, Mount Gower(875 m or 2,871 ft).^[7] The Lord Howe Island Group of islands^[7] comprises 28 islands, islets and rocks. Apart from Lord Howe Island itself the most notable of these is the volcanic and uninhabited Ball's Pyramid about 23 km to the south-east. To the north there is the Admiralty Group, a cluster of seven small uninhabited islands.^[8]

The first reported sighting of Lord Howe Island was on 17 February 1788 when Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, commander of the Armed Tender HMS Supply was on its way from Botany Bay to found a penal settlement on Norfolk Island.^[9] On the return journey Ball sent a party ashore on Lord Howe Island to claim it as a British possession.^[10] It subsequently became a provisioning port for the whaling industry,^[11] and was permanently settled in June 1834.^[12] When whaling declined, the worldwide export of the endemic kentia palms began in the 1880s,^[13]which remains a key component of the Island's economy. The other continuing industry, tourism, began after World War II.

The Lord Howe Island Group is part of the state of New South Wales^[14] that, for legal purposes, is regarded as anunincorporated area administered by the Lord Howe Island Board^[14] which reports to the New South Wales Minister for Environment and Heritage.^[14] The island's standard time zone is UTC+10:30, or UTC+11 when daylight saving time applies.^[15] The currency is the Australian dollar. Commuter airlines are linked to Sydney, Brisbane, Port Macquarie and Norfolk Island.

The Lord Howe Island Group is recorded by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site of global natural significance.^[16]Most of the island is virtually untouched forest with many of the plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Other natural attractions include the diversity of its landscapes, the variety of upper mantle and oceanic basalts, the world's southernmost barrier coral reef, nesting seabirds, and its rich historical and cultural heritage.^[17] The Lord Howe Island Act of 1981 established a "Permanent Park Preserve" (covering approximately 70 per cent of the island).^[15] The surrounding waters are a protected region designated the Lord Howe Island Marine Park.^[18]

Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga (Tongan: Puleʻanga Fakatuʻi ʻo Tonga), is asovereign state and an archipelago comprising 176 islands scattered over 700,000 square kilometres (270,000 sq mi) of the southern Pacific Ocean. Fifty-two of these islands are inhabited.^[4]

Lengthwise, the Kingdom stretches over a distance of about 800 kilometres (500 mi) in a north-south line located about a third of the distance from New Zealand to Hawaii.

Tonga also became known as the Friendly Islands because of the friendly reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit there in 1773. He happened to arrive at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the first fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs had wanted to kill Cook during the gathering, but could not agree on a plan.^[5]

Tonga is also the only island nation in the region to have avoided formal colonisation.^[6] In 2010, it took a decisive step towards becoming a fully functioning constitutional monarchyafter legislative reforms paved the way for its first partial representative elections.
