Happy New Year 2014. Centennial Contacts as of January 201 2014 = 1,508. See more about N1CC at web home pagehttp://www.jlaporta.com/N1CC/ .
This year is ARRL's 100th year. I have a special QSL for contacts made in 2014 in the ARRL Centennial event . please send your card with a business size self-addressed and stamped envelope (SASE) to get one of the cards (Image on this page to see). All contacts will be entered on LoTW.
Operated in the SKN - not much activity this year.
do not participate in eQSL, QRZ Logbook, or WEB logbook. Sorry if you are offended.
December 2013 (Over 1,500 contacts):
The CHRISTMAS CAROL special event operation for 2013 is now complete, you may go to this link to see the results:http://www.jlaporta.com/N1CC/n1cc2013.html . This was the 34th year of this "personal" special event. You could follow Christmas Carol on streaming video during the event, however near the end a "Jammer" was rebroadcasting my transmit and receive audio on the frequency we were using. Several folks have associated that behavior with folks who object to Christ. I am sorry that the offenders can't keep their hate to themselves. We did have over 400 hams who were willing to share the celebration of the secular spirit of the season, show now that over 12,000 have called in and shared over the 34-year history of the event.
Note: December 30, 2013 Google's overhead view of my location was updated by Google, and now you can see the cleared area for the tower, the stack of 4" PVC that was installed to protect the coax and control leads from the wild pigs, deer, and other "varmits" as well as bury the PVC as a conduit for some 300' of the overall run (Update the week before the tower was put up).
The ARRL 10 Meter contest was very good. With over 750 contacts using 5 Watts - QRP I set a new personal record for my ARRL 10 Meter operations over the years from many locations. There was a lack of Es propagation so that I missed several states and had virtually no communications with the SE and NE US states . and no close in states - heard, but did not hear the 5 Watt signal. Most of the stations that I called got me on the first try, even in pileups. But the scatter/Es contacts were nearly impossible - in checking the notes I made 90% of the scatter-weak signals were running HP and were at the ESP level on my end, it is no wonder I could not work the folks!
ARRL 160 resulted in over 325 contacts. The Inverted L worked very well, and this was the highest score made from Texas to date for me. With coaching from some 160M enthusiasts I am adding a current choke and a impedence based elevated radial system. Right now no choke and onlytwo 135' elevated radials probably limited the performance. The work done after CQWW CW improved that performance, and I am considering a system for receive - as my noise level from local sources (powerline) runs S9 + 10 all the time on 160. So, a loop, K9AY, or beverages are being studied.
November 2013 (Over 2,500 contacts):
Both SS modes and the CW CQWWDX events resulted in higher scores made then I had made before from Texas. So the antenna system is working well. We took the Alpha Delta DX-LB down and made it into a Fan Dipole for 80/20 and have it up at 50' with the ends at 40' for 80 and 45' for 40. Antenna works very well on 40 and better than the shortened version did on any band, including 80 meters. The Inverted L for 160 didn't work very well and was taken down and installed with the vertical portion about 60' and the top flatop portion going south for the balance of 68' ending at over 50 feet high overall. Early RBN and a few signal reports are encouraging.
The CQWWDX SSB was great! Scored better than any previous attempts from Texas. During the ARRL SS CW I ran out of hours to use due to weather condtions, still scored higher than I have in other Texas operations . there is a lot of fine competition from other North Texas Contest Club associates . Looking forward to the SS Phone November 16-17 and CQWWDX CW the following weekend!
160 is in the plans for before December 2013. Some form of low band receive system will also begin work.the property is about 650’ deep 550’ on the south end and on the north narrows to 140’ – the majority of useable antenna space is in the southern 2/3 of the land – that is also the forest.
Dan, K1TO, of A1 Towers made two trips to Texas to remove the old tower and antenna in Mabank and then to install the new tower and antenna in Frankston. This first tower is the "domestic" tower/antenna - see how well it has performed above! During 2014 the “DX System” will be installed – sometime in September. We will have to clear more trees and make many other preparations, Dan, K1TO will be back to install that system.
N1CC and NE5LL have moved to the shores of Lake Palestine about 40 miles East of Mabank. The move began on Field Day weekend! Finally enough land to put up an antenna farm! I also had open heart surgery in February 2013 making this an eventual year!
More to come soon! In the meantime, here's more biography!
During 2012 all operation was from Mabank, Henderson County, Texas.
The CHRISTMAS CAROL LINK 2012: http://www.jlaporta.com/N1CC/n1cc2012.html was the33rd Year of the Special Event.
I was the General Manager, a for-fee contract position for QCWA from March to December 2012. This was a "business position" and I will not discuss QCWA on the air. Please don't ask. (FCC 06-149, 21 FCC Rcd.11643, released October 10, 2006 at Paragraph 52, and the Order, DA-99-2654,14 FCC Rcd. 20595, released November 29, 1999 (WTB) .
Details of the Force-12 C3 put into operation in July 2011 are located on the Chistmas Carol Link 2011 page in a PDF that you can view. In 2011 I won Plaques for both Phone and CW Sweepstakes for West Gulf Division and led the 5th Call area in my class for CQWW DX. In the 2012 ARRL 10-Meter contest I "tried" QRP - even with less than ideal condtions I came in 4th in the USA, first in West Gulf and North Texas.
2011's Christmas Carol was #32 as a Special Event both 2011 and 2012 used the same antenna system at the Mabank QTH. This was: Force-12 C3 at 40 feet, Alpha-Delta DX-LB in inverted vee configuration, apex at 38' ends at 20',DX Engineering 43' Vertical with Remote Tuner at the base and 32 radials. I would shift between the Inverted Vee and Vertical on 80M and 40M, as different results due to propagation will show one working better than the other.
I operated from Mabank, Henderson County, Texas November 2005 through June 2013. My website shows current station configuration and activities.
Notes:
Frankston is located in TWO Texas counties. I am in Henderson County, not Anderson.

Opinion:
I prefer real operating on the air, and am not into Internet or Social Networking. The new concept of "Remote" where people use a station many miles or thousands of miles from where they actually are is interesting, however, not something that I would consider doing. For those stations you should have to be assigned a special call, so that people you call know you are "spoofing" your actual physical location at a virtual site.
I will QSL via the ARRL Bureau system, direct, and LoTW.
73, Jim
