Guinea-Bissau, officially the Republic of Guinea-Bissau Listeni/ˈɡɪni bɪˈs/ (PortugueseRepública da Guiné-Bissaupronounced: [ʁeˈpublikɐ dɐ ɡiˈnɛ biˈsaw]), is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Senegalto the north and Guinea to the south and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to its west. It covers 36,125 km² (nearly 14,000 sq mi) with an estimated population of 1,600,000.
Guinea-Bissau was once part of the kingdom of Gabu, as well as part of the Mali Empire. Parts of this kingdom persisted until the 18th century, while a few others were part of the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. It then became the Portuguese colony of Portuguese Guinea in the 19th century. Upon independence, declared in 1973 and recognised in 1974, the name of its capital, Bissau, was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with the bordering Republic of Guinea. Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability since gaining independence and no elected president has successfully served a full five-year term. On the evening of 12 April 2012, members of the country's military staged a coup and arrested the interim president and a leading presidential candidate. The military has yet to declare a current leader for the country.[4] However, former vice chief of staff, General Mamadu Ture Kuruma has taken care of the country in the transitional period and started negotiations with opposition parties.[5][6]
Only 14% of the population speaks the official language, Portuguese. A plurality of the population (44%) speaks Kriol, a Portuguese-based creole language, and the remainder speak native African languages. The main religions are African traditional religions and Islam, and there is a Christian (mostly Catholic) minority.
The country's per-capita gross domestic product is one of the lowest in the world.

Will be QRV again from late January 2013! I will be operating 99% CW, other modes on request. I will be operating 10-30m with a small vertical most of the time, maybe 40m ocassionally. Please do not ask for other bands, especially six meters, I have no antennas and no time to waste waiting for ocassional openings. Please do not send QSL cards to the HA Buro!

Equipment used: K3 (100W), Outbacker Perth+, later maybe the 5-Band Spiderbeam and/or GP, dipole, 2x100Ah batteries.
MixW for RTTY, UCXLog for the rest, running on my built-in CAR-PC or the old IBM Thinkpad.
For all info, including QSL status and OnLine Log, please see my Africa website!
A few hints to make our life easier and our hobby more fun:
  • Know what "UP" means!
  • Avoid dupes! I update the online log almost every day, check your QSOs!
  • If a specific country or continent is called, don't call if you are not there! For those who have trouble understanding it, DON'T CALL FROM EUROPE IF I CALL JA or NA or USA or ASIA etc.
Further details are on the DX Code of Conduct website, keep those in mind!

73, Peter

Recent pix of Dave N2NL, Ned AA7A, Joel KG6DX and myself, KH2L taken during Ned's visit to KH2.
Greetings from Guam (OC-026). Tnx for looking me up and I appreciate ur reading this.Former calls were: K2QGC, KA2EP (Japan), KG6ARH, AH2BV, and AH2L.
I am in my 55th year of ham radio, I was first licensed as KN2QGC in early 1958. I still remember my first nervous QSO on 40m CW with my Elmer W2HQL (now W1JR). I still get nervous when I QSO with him more than 50 years later, hi.
I grew up in Wantagh, L.I., NY and as a kid I also spent a lot of time on the West Coast of FL and in the FL Keys. In the very early 60s I joined the Air Force and was sent to Guam for two years where I operated as K2QGC/KG6 and where I also met my XYL (KH2CM). After returning to the states for a year I was stationed in JA land for 3 years and operated as KA2EP near Tokyo. I returned to Guam in 68 with a new call, KG6ARH.
In 1976, a great typhoon damaged my house and destroyed my business. I sold my ham gear to rebuild my business.
I have lived most of my life on Guam and enjoy fishing, hunting and hamming. After leaving the Air Force I worked for NASA for ten years and have been in the commercial broadcast business for more than 38 years. I have owned and operated a charter and commercial fishing business and a fish market. More than 10 years years ago I put on another hat, pastoring a Southern Baptist church in the village of Santa Rita.
I work 160-6m. I prefer CW, but will sometimes work SSB, RTTY and PSK31. I will try to meet skeds for those who need KH2. I enjoy working the CW pileups until my old boat handling hands start doing things on their own.
My station is: K3, AL-1200, a 4 ele SteppIR DB 32 with dual30/40m loops at 78' (23m). Low band antenna is 1/4 wave 80m vertical with 120 short radials, base loaded for 160m.
One final note: If you’ve missed a QSO with me you really haven’t missed much. But if you have missed a QSO with my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, you’ve missed it all.
73 es God Bless,
Ed, KH2L
