1923 and 1924 marked the zenith of long distance communication records. Starting with the first ever contact between ZL & VK in 1923 it went on in 1924 with first ever QSO's & new distance records for connections between ZL-LU, ZL-W6 and only days later ZL-W1. The culmination was on the 18th of October 1924 when between 0615 to 0730 UTC on 90 meters (in those days) the first Trans-World contact took place between Frank Bell (a sheep farmer) Z4AA (ZL4AA) in Shag Valley, NZ and Cecil Goyder (an 18 years old student) at Mill Hill School in London using the callsign G2SZ.
26. Apr 1923, 1st ZL-VK trans-Tasman contact, 4AA – 2CM
22. May 1924, 1st ZL-LU (10,300 km) contact, 2AC – RCB8, world record
21. Sep 1924, 1st ZL-W6 (11,100 km) contact, Z4AA-U6BCP, world record
13. Oct 1924, 1st ZL-W1 (14,000 km) contact, Z4AA-U1CF, world record
18. Oct 1924, 1st ZL-G trans-World contact, Z4AA-G2SZ, world record
New Zealand DXers are proud of the many ZL DXing milestones over the years. The Kiwi DX Group an informal group of ZL DXers and contesters are commemorating this event and many other ZL firsts, which occurred during this period.
Join us in celebrating 90 years of DX in ZL.
The Special Callsign ZM90DX will be in use between October 1, 2013 to October 31, 2014. We will be active from both North & South Island and the IOTA number will be printed to the QSO.
Our logs will be uploaded to LOTW regularly.
