Here is your chance to prove how adept you are at microsurgery. This mod will enable the TS-870S to transmit on MARS, CAP and othe frequencies.

Remove top and bottom covers.
Remove the top screw from each side of the front panel assembly.
Carefully rotate the front panel forward to gain access to the control board(x53-3560-11 a/4).
This board is mounted vertically against the body of the transceiver. It is not the board that is mounted in the front panel assembly.
Locate and remove resistor R244 from the control board. R244 is below IC12 ROM and above IC23. There are two chip resistors, one on top of the other -carefully remove or break the top one..it is easily fractured -that's R244.
Reassemble and then perform the cpu reset by holding the A=B button depressed as power is turned on.
Thanks to Joe W4JF for this picture.

This call has been assigned to me since December 2007 - my first VR2 call (I was licensed in the UK before I came to Hong Kong) being VR2LH, issued to me in mid 1994. Although licensed I never actually transmitted from VR2 until December 2005. Amateur callsigns previously used in Hong Kong started with VS6. The assignment of the VS6 series callsigns was discontinued in August 1993. The VR2 series were then introduced (existing holders of the VS6 series callsigns were allowed to retain these callsigns in parallel with their newly assigned VR2 series callsigns until 30 June 1997- Britain handed Hong Kong over to China on 1st July 1997). Incidentally just two letters after a VR2 prefix signifies that the holder has passed the 12 wpm morse exam and originally meant that the amateur held a 'Class A' (full) license thus allowing HF privileges. All VR2 amateurs now have access to HF, whether they have passed a morse test or not, so apart from vanity two letters after the VR2 prefix means nothing in reality. By the way VR2CB was issued previously to another amateur however I have no information as to who or when other than there may have been a station with the call 'VR2CB' active from Fiji in the 1950's - if you know more on the previous VR2CB license/station please let me know!
I'm QRV on HF, mainly 15m, 12m or 10m SSB (due to noise issues on lowwer bands), usually using a 10m 5/8 wave vertical although some times the odd short bit of wire or a mag loop.
Recently started to try the key again (25+ years since my last CW QSO so sorry as it is kinda BAD but getting there - reminds me of golf: practice at the range and think you are 'maybe' reasonable however once on the course it is a whole different game...).
If you really do need a QSL card send it direct as the buro takes a while and although the guys do a great job it could get lost my end/damaged in a typhoon/eaten by bugs or rot in the 95%+ summer humidity! By the way if you send a QSL card via the post/mail I suggest that you do not write 'China' or 'Peoples Republic of China'on the envelope as it will probably get sent elsewhere rather than straight to Hong Kong. And sorry to say for those chasing IOTA my QTH is not on HK island. 73!

I was first licenced in March 1973. I came on the air with a Heathkit HW-101 Transceiver and a G5RV antenna. The HW 101 was later replaced with a Yaesu FT-101B Transceiver, and a home made 3 Band 2 Element Cubical Quad completed the antenna farm.In 1977 other pursuits had to be given priority, and I became inactive. I sold my station in the same year and I was QRT. I never imagined at the time, it would be 27 years before I would be back on the air again.
In January 2004 I was able to return to the hobby. My Station comprised of an Icom-746, and once again a G5RV antenna. What a joy it was to be back on the air! Later, a Carolina Windom 80, and a Carolina Windom 80 Special replaced the G5RV.
Having retired in October 2006 after a 44-year career in the Public Service, I now have more time to play radio. There have also been a number of changes to the station since 2004 as well.
My current station comprises – a 5 Band Heavy Duty Spiderbeam at 10 meters above ground. (I still have my Carolina Windoms). A Yaesu FT-950, and a Icom IC-7410.
Since putting up the Spiderbeam, entries in my log have certainly increased from the many pile-ups I have been in. My favourites bands are 17, 15, 12 and 10 meters. I also get on 40 meters occasionally.
I do not chase DX. I have no need to really. I work whoever comes along. I simply enjoy giving Hams a chance to put a ZD7 in their logs. I respond to all requests for QSL Cards providing they are accompanied by 2 US Dollars (or Euro or Sterling notes) and an SAE. PLEASE! do not send coins or stamps. AND do not QSL via VE1AIH who was my QSL Manager. (He is now a Silent Key anyway). Getting a card back to you could take 3-8 weeks, this is beyond my control, as ZD7 land does not have an air service. So please be patient.
