VISITORS
All
the nine islands of the Azores Archipelago are volcanic origin and are
located roughly between 37 and 40 north latitude and 25 and 31 west
longitude, with the island of Flores marking the western most border of
the European continent.
I
live on the island of Sao Miguel, nicknamed the green island, is a land
of lakes nestled in volcanic craters with a landscape formed by
extensive fields and trees.
On
land one can enjoy the unique landscapes whilst walking through the
many trails that are available. Another way to enjoy the beauty of the
island is by horse riding or by cycling. The two golf courses on the
island of Sao Miguel, besides offering the practice of this sport, also
provide a direct contact with unspoiled Nature. Those who prefer more
action may hire a 4x4 SUV, a quad-bike or a mountain bike. Paragliding
also offers the view of the beautiful lakes from a totally different
perspective and the ability to take unique pictures. On the Green
Island, canoeing and other sports can be practiced on lakes located in
the craters of extinguished volcanoes. In some lakes and streams,
carrying the proper license, one can equally fish, an activity for which
the extensive rocky shore is a paradise. Diving, whale watching or big
game fishing are other activities with a great development. On the north
coast of the island, there are many spots available for the practice of
surf and body board.
To
relax from the strong emotions of the day, why not drinking a cup of
tea, the tea plantations of Gorreana and Porto Formoso, appearing in the
horizon as a sea of green leaves, are unique in the Europe. During
visits to the factories, one learns the history and evolution of the
machinery, before a well deserved cup of Azorean tea.
Given
its dimension and the diversity of facilities and services it offers,
Sao Miguel is the island for experiencing, a true gateway to the active
discovery of the Azores Archipelago.

In 2012, the archipelago of the Azores was awarded the Number 1 Quality
Coast Destination prize for the third consecutive time. The European
Union awarded the Azores the only international sustainable tourism
award for coastal destinations. The archipelago holds the official
status of Quality Coast Destination, being thus the most sustainable
coastal destination in Europe to spend holidays.

QualityCoast Platinum Award 2014 - 2015
QualityCoast
is today’s largest programme for the international certification of
sustainable destinations. The programme is composed of a renowned jury
from the Coastal & Marine Union – EUCC, who have unanimously decided
to award the Azores the most important QualityCoast prize, being it the
first time a destination achieves the platinum award. This award was
purposely created to recognise not only quality standards related to
marine life, nature and coastal areas, but also quality standards
regarding identity, culture and society, which may affect the experience
of tourists visiting the region. The goal of Quality Coast is to
promote sustainable, economical and high quality destinations.
Therefore, tourists can feel safe about their choice of destination when
taking this international certification programme into account. The
QualityCoast Platinum Award once again recognises and stresses the good
environmental and sustainability practices carried out in the Azores,
which are in fact increasingly recognised at international level, as
well as the Region’s investment in environmental preservation.
