50 YEARS OF DX LIFE IN ALL SHAPES AND COLORS
Walking on the beautiful beach in one of those well over 100 countries I have visited and operated from, under the palm trees or otherwise, brings back wonderful memories that only traveling the world can offer. It has taken me some 50 years to see and experience them all and determine which country is the best one overall and where the radio works best in all segments of the radio spectrum.
Experimenting with novel technology advances and trying out a variety of applications with their cleverness and ingeniousness able to change your whole life in a way never imagined before can be quite mind-boggling - and educational. It took 50 years to learn that evolution will never stop, but it does assume from mankind continued improvement. In this endeavor, competitive Amateur Radio offers a valuable way forward.
Experiencing friendships of all kinds and watching seemingly firm relationships falter while others unexpectedly thrive proves that people in this world after all pursue their own interests, and only a few individuals stand out as those that you can trust and share your emotions with. It took me 50 years to identify those few that are worth their weight in gold. Here, meeting people of all races and cultures, domestic and overseas, has confirmed the truth.
Finally, to realize that the power of nature and the strength of the family unit in the ups and downs of life are infinite is a truth that easily spans those 50 years. But the ultimate realization comes from deriving great satisfaction from finding a country, a constant evolutionary curve, trusted friends and full understanding of your nature and your own family - which can make those 50 years of life highly gratifying.
The activities of the OH2BH jubilee year (2011) have touched upon all these elements, of all shapes and colors, finally leading to an ultimate truth in which Amateur Radio has played an important role. So, in the final analysis, you can ask this question: has it all been worth those 50 years to be a DXer?
Yes, the past 50 years have provided me an answer. How about you?
