Angola, officially the Republic of Angola (PortugueseRepública de Angolapronounced: [ʁɨˈpublikɐ dɨ ɐ̃ˈɡɔla];[5]KikongoKimbunduUmbunduRepubilika ya Ngola), is a country in Southern Africa bordered by Namibia on the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the north, and Zambia on the east; its west coast is on the Atlantic Ocean with Luanda as its capital city. The exclave province of Cabinda has borders with the Republic of the Congoand the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Portuguese were present in some—mostly coastal—points of the territory of what is now Angola, from the 16th to the 19th century, interacting in diverse ways with the peoples that lived there. In the 19th century they slowly and hesitantly began to establish themselves in the interior. Angola as a Portuguese colony encompassing the present territory was not established before the end of the 19th century, and "effective occupation", as required by theBerlin Conference (1884) was achieved only by the 1920s. Independence was achieved in 1975, after a protracted liberation war. After independence, Angola was the scene of an intense civil war from 1975 to 2002. The country has vast mineral and petroleum reserves, and its economy has on average grown at a two-digit pace since the 1990s, especially since the end of the civil war. In spite of this, standards of living remain low for the majority of the population, and life expectancy and infant mortality rates in Angola are among the worst-ranked in the world.[6]Angola is considered to be economically disparate, with the majority of the nation's wealth concentrated in a disproportionately small sector of the population.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the First Class CW Operators' Club (FOC), the special callsign GH4FOC will be aired from Jersey during the month of May 2013. A special QSL card will be available and the log will be uploaded to the ARRL's Log Book of the World (LoTW) at the end of the activity. A log search facility will also be available here that will be updated on a regular basis.
Contacts with this station will count as 10 points towards the FOC75 Award.
The GH4FOC call sign will be used on 10th, 11th and 12th May 2013 by FOC members G3SXW and G3TXF.
Founded in 1938, and with its roots, history and management in the UK, the First Class CW Operators' Club promotes good CW (Morse code) operating, activity, friendship and socialising via its worldwide membership of approximately 500. Members are active on all HF bands and the character of the club is best expressed in its motto:
"A man should keep his friendship in constant repair" - Samuel Johnson (1755).
FOC MEMBERS AIM TO….
  • Foster and encourage a high standard of CW operating ability and behaviour on the amateur bands.
  • Observe the licence conditions and principles of band planning.
  • Be considerate to other amateurs at all times.
  • Protect the future of the hobby through being active, encouraging newcomers and supporting a national society.

UPDATE 11/5/2013 - QSOs completed with JA, VU, VK etc. I am using Digipan, so you can transmit up to 1KHz high of my frequency and I can do a 'split' QSO.
UPDATE MAY 11TH 2013 - I am now in Kawthaung, Myanmar. Please look for my signal on 20mb PSK-31. You can check QSOs and request QSLs from my online log at http://www.myradioclub.org/xz1k/
11/5/2013 - LOTW is not yet available. I submitted documents to the ARRL for DXCC approval and LOTW account on 30/4/13, (by courier service from Yangon), but although the package is shown as delivered to the ARRL I have had no feedback. If/when I am allocated an LOTW account, I will upload to LOTW for requested QSLs.
UPDATE MAY 1ST 2013 - During the months of May and June 2013, I MAY operate XZ1K from Tanintharyi State. I will only operate on PSK-31, according to when I have free time. From 1st July, I will be working in Laos, but I will try to return each holiday to re-activate XZ1K
QSL INFORMATION - QSLs will only be available via online verification. There is of course, no bureau in Myanmar and I will have no permanent address there. I will mail out a hard-copy QSL for each QSO verification. SWLs may also submit their reception reports.

In May 2012, after working as a teaching volunteer at a local orphanage in Tanintharyi State, south Myanmar, I applied to the military commander of that state and was granted the amateur radio call-sign of XZ1K, for use within that region.
I subsequently operated for a short while on 10m SSB during May 2012, and achieved QSOs with many Asian stations.
In April 2012, I left Tanintharyi State for a new teaching position in Yangon, and so I was no longer able to operate XZ1K.

Here are some photos taken at that time where I presented items to the orphanage kids that have been purchased with funds donated by several radio amateurs
