My name is Gennadij Khonin. I was born in Alma-Ata, in the Kazakh SSR of the USSR on July 22nd, 1945.
From 1952 to 1963 I attended public school in Alma-Ata.
Near the end of 1964 I was called to active military service. I was a Private of the signal service regiment in Kaluga near Moscow (UA3X area) until the end of 1967.
In 1974 I graduated from Kazakh State University in Alma-Ata receiving my diploma and being professionally qualified as a physicist in the field of nuclear physics. After this I worked as an assistant professor on the physical faculty of the university.
In 1976 I joined the Institute of Astrophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakstan that is located near the city of Alma-Ata, working in the department of Stellar Dynamics in the Exterior Galaxies section.
After that I was the head of the Central Radio Sport Laboratory for Young Technicians of the Republic of Kazakhstan from 1984 to 1989.
In 1990 I returned as leading engineer to the Laboratory of Geostationary Satellites Monitoring of the Astrophysical Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 1999 I graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with a Master of Arts degree in theology, was ordained by the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, served as a pastor in the German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Almaty, and became an instructor at the Lutheran Seminary in Almaty. I became the Rector of the Seminary in 2007. Since 1995 I have been a member of the Board of the Bible Society of Kazakhstan.
In spring 2011 I defended my dissertation at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In May 2011, I received a Doctor's degree.
I have been an amateur radio builder since 1958 when I made my first crystal radio receiver.
From 1961 to 1962 I was an operator of the Young Technical School's Club station. UL7KAX and UL7KAA, the Central Radio Club station of Kazakh SSR in Alma-Ata.
I have been a HAM since 1962 when got my own call-sign, UL7AQX and used it until my call to active military service. After my military service I got a new call-sign, UL7QF, and used it from 1968 until 1993. For contests and special events I've had several call-signs: in May-June 1982, RX7QF; in Aug. 1983, UL7QF/UL7E; in Aug.1984, RL0G; and in Aug.1991-UL0QF.
In July of 1993 Kazakhstan as an Independent State got the new international identification prefixes (UN; UO; UP; UQ) instead of UL and RL, and I received a new call-sign; UN0G. Then I also received the call-signs: UN7QF/7 and UN7QF in 1995 and 1998 respectively. After that I used UN0G only for contests until 2004. Since then I have not used this call-sign.
In the USA I got my first call-sign: KB8RAU on the 4th of January, 1994, in Flint, Michigan, then in May received an extra class call-sign: AA8OR. This is the call-sign that I use when I am visiting the United States.
The year 2012 was a special year for me because it was my 50-year jubilee of HAM
CONTEST ACTIVITY:
In 1975 I started to seriously participate in different contests. In 1982 I took part in the "All Soviet Union Championship": SSB (phone) and CW (Morse code). I was the silver medal winner for the SSB (phone) portion and won the RADIO journal prize of "The Best Competitor of the USSR--1982" for the events' scores combination (SSB & CW).
In 1983 I was the gold medal winner of the "All Soviet Union Championship" SSB (phone). In the same year I was the Champion of all Asia in the AA-DX-Contest-SSB (phone) and won vice-championship in the WPX-DX-Contest-CW (Morse code) on 21 MHz. In this contest I established the record for Asia on this band and kept the record until 1988.
In 2009 I participated in the First Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan or "UN-Contest" and got the bronze medal on 14MHz, (SSB & CW).
Because of my contest achievements I was given the rank of "Sport's Master of the USSR " in 1982.
In 1984 I was given the highest rank of "Sport's Master of the USSR of the International Class".
From 1979 to 1991 I was the Chairman of the Federation of Radio Sport of Alma-Ata and oblast', the General Secretary of the Federation of Radio Sport of Kazakhstan and a member of the Presidium of the Federation of Radio Sport of the USSR as the representative for Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
Until February 1988 I lived in a small house and had a good set of antennas: 3 element QUAD(28MHz); 4 element YAGI (21MHz); 6 element (3 reflectors) YAGI (14 MHz); GP (28;21;14 MHz); 2 element active QUAD (7 MHz); loop (3.5 MHz); long wire (1.8 MHz) and 11 element YAGI (144)MHz and now I use 3 element wide space YAGI (14MHz), GP (28,21MHz), GP (144 MHz) and transceivers IC-765, IC-703, FT-207, and the power amplifier Alpha 76 A
