Sri Lanka (Listeni/ʃr ˈlɑːŋkə//srˈlɑːŋkə/, or /srˈlæŋkə/;[7][8] Sinhalaශ්‍රී ලංකාවTamilஇலங்கை), officially theDemocratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean off the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent in South Asia. Known until 1972 as Ceylon (play /sɨˈlɒn//sˈlɒn/, or /sˈlɒn/), Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
Sri Lanka's documented history spans three thousand years.[9] Its location and deep harbours provided great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road[10] through to World War II.[11] Sri Lanka is the home of many religions, ethnicities and languages.[12] The first Buddhist writings occurred on the island.[13] TheSinhalese people are the majority. The many ethnic minorities include Tamils, Muslim Moors, BurghersKaffirs,Malays and the aboriginal Vedda people.[14] The country's recent history has been marred by a 3-decade inter-ethnic conflict which decisively but controversially[15] ended in a military victory in 2009.[16]
Sri Lanka is a republic and a unitary state governed by a presidential system. The capital Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte, named by a president after himself, is a suburb of the largest city, Colombo. An important producer of tea, coffee, gemstonescoconuts, rubber and the native cinnamon,[17] Sri Lanka has been called The tear drop of India because of its shape and location and is known as "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean" because of it's natural beauty. It is also known as "The nation of smiling people".[18] The island contains tropical forests, and diverse landscapes with high biodiversity.
The country has had a long history of international engagement, being a founding member of SAARC and a member of United NationsCommonwealth of NationsG77 and Non-Aligned Movement.

Geography

A roughly oval island with a mountainous center
Topographic map of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka lies on the Indian tectonic plate, a minor plate within the Indo-Australian Plate.[139] It is in the Indian Ocean southwest of the Bay of Bengal, between latitudes  and 10°N, and longitudes 79° and 82°E.[140] Sri Lanka is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. According to the Hindu mythology, a land bridge existed between the Indian mainland and Sri Lanka. It now amounts to only a chain of limestone shoals remaining above sea level.[141] It was reportedly passable on foot up to 1480 AD, until cyclones deepened the channel.[142][143]

A view of Sripada from Maskeliya
The island consists mostly of flat-to-rolling coastal plains, with mountains rising only in the south-central part. The highest point Pidurutalagala, reaching 2,524 metres (8,281 ft) above sea level. The climate is tropical and warm, due to the moderating effects of ocean winds. Mean temperature ranges from 17 °C (62.6 °F) in thecentral highlands, where frost may occur for several days in the winter, to a maximum of 33 °C (91.4 °F) in other low-altitude areas. Average yearly temperature ranges from 28 °C (82.4 °F) to nearly 31 °C (87.8 °F). Day and night temperatures may vary by 14 °C (57.2 °F) to 18 °C (64.4 °F).[144]

Sri Lanka seen from space
Rainfall pattern is influenced by monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. The "wet zone" and some of the windward slopes of the central highlands receive up to 2,500 millimetres (98.4 in) of rain each month, but the leeward slopes in the east and northeast receive little rain. Most of the east, southeast, and northern parts of the country comprise the "dry zone", which receives between 1,200 mm (47 in) and 1,900 mm (75 in) of rain annually.[145] The arid northwest and southeast coasts receive the least amount of rain at 800 mm (31 in) to 1,200 mm (47 in) per year. Periodic squalls occur and sometimes tropical cyclones bring overcast skies and rains to the southwest, northeast, and eastern parts of the island. Humidity is typically higher in the southwest and mountainous areas and depends on the seasonal patterns of rainfall.[146]
The longest of the 103 rivers in the country is Mahaweli River, covering 335 kilometres (208 mi).[147] These waterways give rise to 51 natural waterfalls of 10 meters or more. The highest is Bambarakanda Falls, with a height of 263 metres (863 ft).[148] Sri Lanka's coastline is 1,585 km long.[149] It claims an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) extending 200 nautical miles, approximately 6.7 times the country's land area. The coastline and adjacent waters support highly productive marine ecosystems such as fringing coral reefs, shallow beds of coastal andestuarine seagrasses.[150] Sri Lanka inherits 45 estuaries and 40 lagoons too.[149] Country's mangrove ecosystem which spans over 7,000 hectares, played a vital role in buffering the force in the waves of 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.[151] The island is rich with minerals such as IlmeniteFeldsparGraphiteSilicaKaolin,Mica and Thorium.[152][153] Existence of Petroleum in the Gulf of Mannar has also been confirmed and extraction attempts are underway.[154]

Montenegro (Listeni/ˌmɒntɨˈnɡr/ or /ˌmɒntɨˈnɡr/; or /ˌmɒntɨˈnɛɡr/MontenegrinCrna Gora Црна Гора [tsr̩̂ːnaː ɡɔ̌ra] ( listen), meaning "Black Mountain") is a country in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the south-west and is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast and Albania to the southeast.[5] Its capital and largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is designated as the Prijestonica (Пријестоница), meaning the former Royal Capital City.[6]
In the 10th century, there existed three Slavic principalities on the territory of Montenegro: Duklja, roughly corresponding to the southern half, Travunia, the west, and Rascia, the north. In 1042, archon Stefan Vojislav led a revolt that resulted in independence of Duklja and the establishment of the Vojislavljević dynasty. Duklja reached its zenith under Vojislav's son, Mihailo (1046–81), and his son Bodin (1081–1101).[7] By the 13th century, Zeta had replaced Duklja when referring to the realm, which at the time was part of the Serbian Grand Principality of the Nemanjić dynasty.
With the fall of the Serbian Empire in the late 14th century, southern Montenegro (Zeta) came under the rule of the Balšić noble family, then the Crnojević noble family, and by the 15th century, Zeta was more often referred to as Crna Gora (Venetianmonte negro). As the Crnojevic dynasty disintegrated, Montenegro was ruled by its Bishops until 1696, and then by the House of Petrović-Njegoš until 1918. From 1918, it was a part of Yugoslavia. On the basis of a referendum held on 21 May 2006, Montenegro declared independence on 3 June of that year.
Montenegro is classified by the World Bank as a middle-income country. Montenegro is a member of the UN, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the Central European Free Trade Agreement and a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean. Montenegro is currently an official candidate for membership of the European Union[8] andofficial candidate for membership of NATO.[9]

The Cook Islands (Listeni/ˈkʊk ˈləndz/Cook Islands MāoriKūki 'Āirani[3]) is a self-governing parliamentary democracy in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. It is composed of 15 small islands whose total land area is 240 square kilometres (92.7 sq mi). The Cook Islands' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), however, covers 1,800,000 square kilometres (690,000 sq mi) of ocean.[4]
The main population centres are on the island of Rarotonga (14,153 in 2006), where there is an international airport. There is a much larger population of Cook Islanders in New Zealand, particularly the North Island. In the 2006 census, 58,008 self-identified as being of ethnic Cook Island Māori descent.[5]
With about 100,000 visitors travelling to the islands in the 2010-11 financial year,[6] tourism is the country's main industry, and the leading element of the economy, far ahead of offshore banking, pearls, and marine and fruit exports.
Defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, in consultation with the Cook Islands. In recent times, the Cook Islands have adopted an increasingly independent foreign policy. Although Cook Islanders arecitizens of New Zealand, they have the status of Cook Islands nationals, which is not given to other New Zealand citizens.

Geography

Map of the Cook Islands.
The Cook Islands are in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand, between French Polynesia andAmerican Samoa. There are 15 major islands spread over 2.2 million km² of ocean, divided into two distinct groups: the Southern Cook Islands and the Northern Cook Islands of coral atolls.[7]
The islands were formed by volcanic activity; the northern group is older and consists of six atolls, which are sunken volcanoes topped by coral growth. The climate is moderate to tropical.
The 15 islands and two reefs are grouped as follows:
