Maldives (Listeni/ˈmɔːldvz/, /ˈmɔːldvz/ or /ˈmældvz/[7]; Dhivehi: ދިވެހިރާއްޖެ Dhivehi Raa'je), officially the Republic of Maldives (Dhivehi: ދިވެހިރާއްޖޭގެ ޖުމްހޫރިއްޔާ Dhivehi Raa'jeyge Jumhooriyya) and also referred to as the Maldive Islands, is an island nation in theIndian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls, orientated north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep, India) and the Chagos Archipelago. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometres (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of India.
From the mid-sixteenth century, the Maldives was dominated by colonial powers: Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain. The Dutch referred to the islands as the "Maldivische Eilanden" (pronounced [mɑlˈdivisə ˈɛi̯lɑndə(n)]),[citation needed] while the British anglicised the local name for the islands first as the "Maldive Islands" and later as the "Maldives". The islands gained independence from the British in 1965 and became a republic ruled by asultanate and an authoritarian government.
The Maldives archipelago is located on top of the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean. Maldives also form a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Chagos and the Lakshadweep.[8] The Maldives atolls encompass a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 sq mi), making the country one of the world's most geographically dispersed. Its population of 328,536 (2012) inhabits 200 of its 1,192 islands.[9] In 2006, Maldives' capital and largest city Malé, located at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll, had a population of 103,693.[10][11] Malé is one of the Maldives' administrative divisions and, traditionally, it was the "King's Island" where the ancient Maldive royal dynasties were enthroned.
Maldives is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country.[12] It is also the country with the lowest natural highest point in the world, at 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in).[12] Not surprisingly, forecasts of Maldives' inundation are a great concern for the Maldivian people.

Brazil Listeni/brəˈzɪl/ (PortugueseBrasilIPA: [bɾaˈziw][8]), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil[9][10] (PortugueseRepública Federativa do BrasilAbout this sound listen), is the largest country in South America and in the Latin America region. It is the world's fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population with over 193 million people.[11][4] It is the largestLusophone country in the world, and the only one in the Americas.[11]
Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi).[11] It is bordered on the north by VenezuelaGuyanaSuriname and the French overseas region ofFrench Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagosform part of Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de NoronhaRocas AtollSaint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz.[11] It borders all other South American countries exceptEcuador and Chile.
Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until 1815, when it was elevated to the rank of kingdom and the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves was formed. The colonial bond was in fact broken in 1808, when the capital of thePortuguese colonial empire was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, after Napoleon invaded Portugal.[12] Independence was achieved in 1822 with the formation of the Empire of Brazil, a unitary state governed under a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary system. The country became a presidential republic in 1889, when a military coup d'état proclaimed the Republic, although the bicameral legislature, now called Congress, dates back to the ratification of the first constitution in 1824.[12] Its current Constitution, formulated in 1988, defines Brazil as a Federal Republic.[13] The Federation is formed by the union of the Federal District, the 26 States, and the 5,564 Municipalities.[13][14]
The Brazilian economy is the world's sixth largest by nominal GDP and the seventh largest bypurchasing power parity (as of 2011).[15][16] Brazil is one of the world's fastest growing major economies. Economic reforms have given the country new international recognition.[17] Brazil is a founding member of the United Nations, the G20CPLPLatin Union, the Organization of Ibero-American States, the Organization of American StatesMercosul and the Union of South American Nations, and is one of the BRIC countries. Brazil is also one of the 17 Megadiverse countries, home to diverse wildlifenatural environments, and extensive natural resources in a variety of protected habitats.[11] With a confirmed presence of 67 isolated tribes by theFundação Nacional do Índio, Brazil has the world's greatest number of uncontacted peoples.[18]

Togo, officially the République Togolaise or, in English, the Togolese Republic Listeni/ˈtɡ/, is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east andBurkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where the capital Lomé is located. Togo covers an area of approximately 57,000 square kilometres (22,000 sq mi) with a population of approximately 6.7 million.
Togo is a tropicalsub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with a climate that provides good growing seasons. The official language is French, with many other languages spoken in Togo, particularly those of the Gbe family. The largest religious group in Togo are those with indigenous beliefs, and there are significant Christian and Muslim minorities. Togo is a member of the United NationsAfrican UnionOrganisation of Islamic Cooperation,South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation ZoneLa Francophonie and Economic Community of West African States.
From the 11th to the 16th century, various tribes entered the region from all directions. From the 16th century to the 18th century, the coastal region was a major trading centre for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "TheSlave Coast". In 1884, Germany declared Togoland a protectorate. After World War I, rule over Togo was transferred to France. Togo gained its independence from France in 1960.[4]
In 1967, Gnassingbé Eyadéma led a successful military coup, after which he became president. At the time of his death in 2005, Eyadéma was the longest-serving leader in modern African history, after having been president for 38 years.[5] In 2005, his son Faure Gnassingbé was elected president. In April 2012, Togo was ranked 156th in Gross National Happiness - GNH World Happiness report published by the earth institute.[6]
